Two people, including an imam, were killed in an explosion at a mosque in Kabul’s Green Zone

Kabul : An explosion at a popular mosque in the green zone of Afghanistan’s capital Kabul has killed imams and worshipers.

The blast comes as seven civilians were killed in an attack in the northern part of the Afghan capital, and Afghan officials have blamed the Taliban for the attack.

No one has yet claimed responsibility for the blast at the mosque.

The blast, which took place in the safest part of the city, was heard far away, and sirens sounded at nearby embassies and international offices, prompting staff to move to safer rooms.

“Unfortunately, this evening terrorists attacked the Wazir Akbar Khan Mosque with explosives,” Interior Ministry spokesman Tariq Aryan told AFP.

Where the Mosque Located in Kabul?

The mosque is located at the entrance of the Green Zone and people can enter the mosque located in this high-security area from both sides and important leaders often offer Eid prayers here.

The blast killed the mosque’s imam, Ayaz Niazi, who was popular in Kabul and whose sermons were attended by people from far-flung areas, Tariq Aryan said.

Aryan had said in an initial statement that it was a suicide attack, but after an investigation, he said it was not yet clear what the nature of the blast was.

A spokesman for Afghan President Ashraf Ghani called it a heinous attack.

It should be noted that a journalist and a driver were killed in an explosion on Saturday and ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack.

A roadside bomb killed seven civilians in Kunduz province on Monday. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, but provincial spokesman Ismatullah Moradi blamed the Taliban.
